Circus of the Damned (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter No.3) – Laurell K. Hamilton
Berkley Books, 2004 (Originally published 1995)
There are disadvantages to being the most famous vampire hunter in St Louis. The police expect Anita to find a vampire master gone mad; meanwhile, the vampire in charge of the city wants Anita on his side, and doesn’t much care whether she’s willing to be there. Then there’s Edward, hit man turned slayer of the supernatural, who wants a name only Anita can give. It’s shaping up for one hell of a Halloween.
This third instalment of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series is the same fast-paced, gory and gripping urban fantasy but the romantic element is getting stronger. Though it’s mostly well-handled, I am a little concerned about where it’s being set up to go next. On the plus side, some of Anita’s other relationships get extra depth, particularly her complicated understanding with Edward. The series continues with The Lunatic Café.
